World Cup Betting: Netherlands vs Costa Rica Quarter-Final Preview
- Category :
The Costa Ricans have thus far defied all logic and not only qualified from the ‘Group of Death’ but made it all the way through to the quarter-finals after a heroic 10-man win versus Greece. The Netherlands have been the most impressive team of the tournament so far and look like they’ve got their eye on the prize.
Netherlands vs Costa Rica
Friday, July 5th – 4:00 PM ET
Odds: Netherlands +1.45, Costa Rica +6.76, Draw +4.52
Total: 2.5 Over 1.98, Under 1.80
After an extra-time thriller against Greece, Costa Rica will hope to have enough left in the tank to take on the Dutch in Salvador. Having been shown a red card versus Greece, Oscar Duarte will be suspended for this encounter, so either Roy Miller or Johnny Acosta will take his place in the back line, but the rest of the starting line-up should remain the same.
No one is suspended for the Netherland following their last minute victory over Mexico in Fortaleza, but Nigel de Jong will miss the rest of the tournament due to an injury. Scarborough, Ontario native Jonathan de Guzman may be placed in the starting lineup after having been left on the bench in favour of Georginio Wijnaldum against Mexico.
No one – and I mean no one – expected Costa Rica to get this far. They spanked Uruguay in the first match of the group stages and booked their place in the Round of 16 a week later, after a deserved win against Italy. Unfortunately, while most neutrals would love to see them advance, the Dutch may prove to be too strong. Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie have been fantastic in Brazil 2014, and those two players alone should be enough to see off a well drilled Costa Rican side.
Handicapping The Total
Costa Rica will sit back and hope to hit the Netherlands on the counter attack. The Netherlands have scored at least two goals in each of their previous matches and put five past Spain in their opening game of the tournament. If this were a first round match up we’d pick the over. At this stage in the tournament the defenses always seem to tighten up, but it could go either way.
Prediction: Netherlands +1.45, Under 2.5
